Single-use plastics are disposable plastics that are used only once before being recycled or thrown away.
Single-use plastic include plastic bags, plastic food packaging, plastic water bottles, plastic straws, microbeads, plastic containers, plastic cups, and cutlery. These types of plastic should be used only once; They should not be reused and, if reused, it increases the risk of chemical release and bacterial growth; Single-use plastics are mainly made from polyethylene terephthalate, which can release carcinogens when heated.
Global Lifestyle Lanka is taking up the challenge to make the shift towards reducing single use plastic starting with all 30 plus employees and extending these values to their business associates around the country.
Within a short period of practicing the ban of single use plastic at our office we realized how much of litter/waste just 30 employees can make during a work week, the most striking was the number of disposable coffee/teacups, plastic takeaway food containers, lunch sheets and water bottles that were thrown away every week.
We supplied employees with a re-usable mug, re-usable water bottles and encouraged to bring their own lunch boxes and within a couple of weeks employee habits changed and our wastage was massively changed.
With this initiative we started to notice the possible impactthat a business of this size could have on the environment, it is through these commitments that we will create a better future by simply changing small actions in their daily life for a better tomorrow.
We encourage other organizations in Sri Lanka and worldwide to also contribute towards a better environment with such programs.
